Lies We Believe, And the Truth We Need Part 2

We are back with 3 more lies we believe along with the truth we need! Let me know what you think after reading these lies below.

THE LIE: If only I had ___ I would be happy
THE TRUTH: God is our first source of happiness

This lie really has become the foundation of the “American Dream.” We continuously strive to get more and more out of life thinking that material things, relationships and jobs will make us happy. This is the furthest from the truth. Whenever we believe that anything outside of God will make us happy, we are in a world of disappointment.

There are countless stories in the Bible of kings having everything they could imagine, food, jewels, servants, money, authority, but they still were unhappy with life.

“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” - Psalm 37:4

Now, this doesn’t mean that God will give you whatever you want. This means that God will be the primary source of your happiness. God will fulfill the longings in your heart, your emptiness, your loneliness, your fear, and worry when you delight yourself in Him.

THE LIE: There’s only one path to success
THE TRUTH: There are multiple paths to success. You have to commit to the journey it takes to get there.
I have recently come to understand that there isn’t only one path to success. For most of us, we’re told to attend school for 12 years and then commit to another 4-5 years of college studying one subject. We’re then expected to obtain a job in a specific industry and work that job for 40 years until we retire.

Well for some of us, that just doesn’t work! Some of us have many different passions in different industries that we’d like to explore. Some of us like to create content, work in finance, work in the tech field and we like to create art. I’ve found that I personally will not work in one field for my entire life. I love to blog, I love to create content on social media, I love teaching plus more. There are many industries that I want to tap in to and I don’t believe I am alone.

No, there’s no specific scripture to address this lie but I do believe God gave me and others like me, multiple talents for a reason. He wants us to use those talents to give Him glory!

So if you’re someone who has multiple talents and skills but feel you have to only choose one to be committed to for the rest of your life, I would ask you to pray and ask God what He wants you to do with those talents and how you can use them to bring Him glory.

THE LIE: Time heals all wounds
THE TRUTH: Time doesn’t heal all wounds, God does

Ok ok, I know this one may ruffle a few feathers BUT we have to be honest. We say this cliche lie many times in an attempt to soothe someone who is in pain. Sometimes we just don’t know what to say to people when they’re hurting so we say things that sound good but may not be the truth in actuality.

When we tell people that time heals all wounds, we are telling them that the pain they’re feeling about the situation they’re in (death, loss, breakup, heartache) will get better and subside as time goes on. This is not necessarily true. Tell that to someone who has lost a parent, a spouse, a close friend, a pet. They will tell you that the wound is still there and it may hurt just as bad as when the wound was first made.

Who DOES heal all wounds, however, is God.

God is the ultimate healer of all things. God knows the pain you’re dealing with and He may be the ONLY one who intimately knows what’s going on. He’s the one that can reach down into your heart and mend it. He’s the one that can comfort you when no one else can.

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” - Psalms 34:17-18

So when we want to help soothe someone that’s going through a hard time, let’s try to listen more than we try to give cliche lines. And if we have to speak, always point them back to THE ONE who can heal their wounds.
